Michael Purves-Smith is an experienced family lawyer. He focuses on high-conflict, complex matters, including custody, support, and property issues. Michael is a tough litigator who has extensive experience in negotiating, mediating, and litigating all types of family law cases.

Michael is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School. While at law school, Michael was the recipient of multiple academic awards, including the Morden prize in Evidence Law. Following law school, Michael articled at a boutique litigation firm in Toronto, Ontario. After his call to the bar, Michael practiced family law with a leading family law firm in Guelph, Ontario.

 

Michael resides in Guelph and is an active member of the Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo communities. He is a member of the Wellington Law Association and the Law Society of Ontario. In his spare time, Michael performs as a Jazz musician. 

FEES

Limited scope retainers: For self-represented clients who require some legal advice or assistance, but do not want to pay to have a lawyer appear in court. This service is sometimes called "unbundled legal service" and can be helpful for people who need help with paperwork and general advice. 

 

Legal aid certificates: accepted on a case-by-case basis. 

 

1 hour Consultation regarding Family Law Matter: $250. I require all clients seeking a consultation to complete an intake form before our meeting. I may cancel the consultation following a review of the intake form or if no intake form is completed.

 

Simple uncontested divorce application: for divorce only, and associated documents, service within Waterloo Region, filing documents with the court, court fees and all disbursements: $1,600.00 + HST.


Uncontested separation agreement / cohabitation / marriage agreement :Total will depend on the complexity of the issues: $700.00 to $3,000.00 + HST. Note this does not include negotiation of terms of agreement.

Adoption with consent of all parties: preparation of all court documents, independent legal advice for the applicant(s) only, filing application and associated documents with the court, and appearance in court $3,000.00 + HST.


Independent legal advice for domestic contract: includes reviewing the agreement and advising you of the legal consequences of the agreement  does not include negotiation of terms of the agreement $650.00 + HST.
 

Travel consent letter for children travelling out of the country: $60.00 + HST.

 

Notarize or commission a document: $60.00 + HST.
